About Larry Cope

With his burgeoning talent, he was encouraged to apply to the Art Institute of Chicago but instead chose the University of Illinois Chicago. His parents worried that he would be a "starving artist". He earned a degree in Graphic Design and has successfully worked in the field for more twenty years. He created numerous award-winning book designs and was also selected to re-design the ceiling medallions for Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago. 

Larry credits his mother-in-law Vivian White with helping him re-energize his passion for art. As she watched him sketch one day, she asked "Why are you creating art that no one will see?" A few weeks later he met renown artist Melvin King who invited him to the Creative Artist Association in Chicago. Since then, he's exhibited art throughout the Chicago area with the Association. He was a regional semi-finalist in the 2018 Bombay Sapphire Art Series in Chicago. For two years in a row, Larry's artwork was a part of the Museum of Science and Industry's 2020  "Black Creativity Juried Art Exhibit.
